WTF?! Analysis!
Misleading.

The photo is real — but it's from 2019. No flooding was reported this morning.

  • No coverage of flooding today across 6 vetted outlets
  • !The account posts every few minutes in an engagement-bait pattern
  • The photo is genuine — first published March 2019

The problem

Most of us are no longer sure what's real online.

✓ 58% of people worldwide worry about what's real and fake in online news1

The feed is where we get our news now — but anything can be published there, everything looks equally credible, and checking takes longer than sharing. So false things travel. Not because people are gullible, but because verification is slow and the burden falls on you.

It goes wrong in more ways than you'd think. Three of the most common:

The claim

Real photos, rewritten stories

A genuine image gets captioned with something that never happened. The picture checks out. The claim around it doesn't.

False news travels about six times faster than the truth2

The account

Sources that aren't what they seem

A “local news desk” that's three days old, posts every two minutes, and exists to farm outrage. The story spreads before anyone asks who's telling it.

80% of fake news came from just 0.3% of accounts3

The media

AI images that look completely real

Photorealistic fakes now take minutes to make and cost nothing. A convincing video no longer means it happened.

People rated AI-generated faces more trustworthy than real ones4

And that's before satire, parody, opinion and honest error — plenty online isn't a lie, but still isn't news. In one major study, content that was misleading without being outright false did 46 times more damage than flagged misinformation5. What the Fact tells those apart too, instead of forcing everything into “true” or “false”.

How it works

From “wait, is this real?” to a clear answer.

01 — The post

A post lands in your feed, and it feels true.

It's urgent. It's everywhere. Thousands of people are already sharing it. This is exactly the moment misinformation is built for — when checking feels slower than believing.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Everything you'd want to know before you download.

How much does it cost?+

What the Fact is free to download and start checking. Any premium options will always leave a meaningful free tier. The goal is to make fact-checking accessible, not gated.

Which platforms can I check?+

Share or paste a link from X, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube — straight from the share sheet. You can also check a post you've screenshotted when a link isn't available.

Is my data private?+

We analyze the public post you share, not your accounts or your contacts. Your verification history is yours, saved so you can revisit past checks.

What sources do you check against?+

Every claim is weighed against 6+ independent, pre-vetted outlets and existing fact-checks. An outlet only counts toward the analysis after we've evaluated its history: how long it's been publishing, how often it posts, and what it actually publishes. Every analysis links to the sources it used.

How does the analysis actually work?+

Three checks run on every post: the claim is cross-checked against vetted coverage; the posting account is profiled for its age, posting pattern, and automation signals; and the media is fingerprinted and run through synthetic-media detection models that flag AI generation and manipulation. The three signals combine into one clear answer with a confidence score.

How accurate is the analysis?+

Every analysis comes with a confidence score and a full signal breakdown, and links to the sources behind it. When the evidence is genuinely mixed, we mark a post Unverified rather than guessing.

What does 'Unverified' mean?+

It means the claim can't be confirmed or debunked with confidence right now, often because sources disagree or the story is still developing. It's a signal to wait, not to trust or dismiss.

Can it detect deepfakes and AI-generated media?+

Yes. Media is run through synthetic-media detection models that flag AI-generated images and video, edits, and manipulations. It's a core part of every check.
